John Ellery

John Ellery

On leaving the City of London School in 1963, John studied for 4 years to become a Chartered Surveyor – working in property management and sales.

Career

John joined the outdoor contractor London and Provincial in 1968 and trained in all aspects of the outdoor medium from billposting to back-lite development. L+P was at the forefront of the outdoor advertising industry at that time and led many Industry initiatives including uniting two Associations into one – developing an acceptable outdoor research programme, and starting a monitoring programme to ensure delivery.

Specifically he was involved in the birth of the street furniture medium, developing acceptable designs and working with Local Authorities to integrate outdoor within modern town centre developments, and the street scene.

L+P and Mills and Allen – being the two largest contractors formed a national sales and marketing operation in 1970 called British Posters. This included 8 other contractors of the day. John prepared and selected all the campaigns that BP presented. The MMC closed BP in 1981.

In 1976 John was appointed Marketing Director of Smiths and Masons – bus advertising, and from there he was appointed Board Director of L+P Group and Adshel – a 50/50 company with More O'Ferrall in 1977. L+P was owned 48% by IPC – Reed Group and they purchased a further 3% to take control. Experiencing a lack of direction at that time John moved on.

In 1981 he joined Dennis Sullivan at Portland – the major Outdoor buying Specialist, as Buying Director, but quickly progressed to Managing Director, and went on to develop the International division which was the first in the business. In 1995 Portland, then controlled by WPP, agreed to purchase Poster Publicity which would have provided a perfect fit of expertise Globally. At the last minute the deal failed.

Due to this failure, John joined Poster Publicity in Jan 1996 to form the International Division and has succeeded in opening offices world-wide, providing a global network with 18 offices outside the UK, producing over half of the groups annual billings of US$400 million. PP opened their 19th office, in Sydney, early in 2005.

PP and WPP formed a joint company, with Portland, called Kinetic Worldwide, to continue to develop the outdoor specialist function globally. Since 1st Jan 2006 John ceased his connection with the Company.
